How to Get Fish and Bait Smell Out of a Boat Cabin

Fishing cockpit area on a recreational boat

To get fish and bait smell out of a boat, wash down the source first. That means the fish box, the bait well, the cockpit, coolers, gloves and towels, and anything that drained into the bilge. Once the source is clean, AIRLOCK One is the whole-boat answer for the fish smell left in the cabin air. It installs by the AC air handler, one per AC unit, and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves through the boat whenever the fan runs. Most boaters install it in 15 to 30 minutes. For a galley, head or berth that still smells after a fishing day, add AIRLOCK Voyage in that spot alongside One. For how One and Voyage work together on a boat with AC, see the best boat air purifier guide.

Why fish smell hangs on

Fish slime, blood and bait juice break down fast in the heat, and the smell travels. It gets into fish box liners, bait well plumbing, cockpit carpet, coolers and the rags and gloves that get tossed in a locker at the end of the day. Some drains into the bilge below the fish box or livewell, where it sits in still water.

Then the crew comes into the salon. Wet clothes, boots and towels bring the smell inside, the cabin gets closed up for the ride home, and the smell settles into cushions, curtains and the air. A spray covers it with fragrance for a while, and the fish smell comes back as soon as the scent fades.

Source work first

Clean the source the same day if you can. Fish smell gets harder to remove the longer it sits.

  1. Fish box and bait well. Empty them, scrub with boat soap and fresh water, and flush the drains and plumbing so nothing sits in the lines. Leave the lids open to dry when you can.
  2. Cockpit and deck. Rinse blood and slime off the deck, the gunwales, the rocket launchers and the cleaning station. Check scuppers and drains for scales and scraps.
  3. Coolers, gloves, rags and towels. Wash them, dry them, and take used bait and fish scraps ashore. A forgotten rag in a locker can smell up a whole boat.
  4. The bilge under the fish box and livewell. Pump it dry, clean it and dry it, so drained slime doesn't sit there. Our bilge smell guide covers the routine.
  5. Carpet and soft goods. Wash removable carpet, cushion covers and towels that picked up smell, following the care label.
  6. Underfloor foam. If fish water soaked into foam under the deck or a fish box, washing the surface won't reach it. That's usually a yard job, and soaked foam may need replacing.
  7. Galley. Clean the cutting board, sink drain and trash, and don't leave fish waste in the galley trash overnight.

What to use, by job

  • The fish box, bait well, deck and gear: a wash-down with boat soap and fresh water. No air product replaces that.
  • Fish smell left in the cabin air with the AC on: AIRLOCK One, working through your boat's AC. It eliminates odors in the air the AC moves whenever the fan runs, cooling or not, and there's nothing to replace.
  • A galley, head or berth that still smells: AIRLOCK Voyage in that spot, alongside AIRLOCK One. It plugs into a 12V socket or a wall outlet and has an odor removal range up to 4 ft.
  • Closed tackle and gear lockers: AIRLOCK OdorGuard coconut shell charcoal bags trap odors in the locker they sit in. Recharge them in the sun about once a month and replace them every 4 to 6 months.
  • A damp gear locker: AIRLOCK MoistureGuard, a silica desiccant for lockers, closets, drawers and compartments. It soaks up damp in the space it sits in, needs no power and is reusable for up to a year.
  • A one-time reset of an empty boat after a bad season: a vapor treatment such as Star brite NosGUARD or Biocide Systems Marine Shocker is a different tool, used exactly as its label directs. It doesn't replace the wash-down.

How AIRLOCK One and AIRLOCK Voyage work together on a fishing boat

On a boat with salon AC, AIRLOCK One works whenever the AC fan runs. That covers the ride in, the evening at the dock and any night the AC stays on. Bigger boats with more than one air handler need one per AC unit to cover the whole boat. With the fan off, One does nothing, so run the fan after a fishing day when the boat is buttoned up.

AIRLOCK Voyage goes where the smell is worst. That might be the galley where the catch gets prepped, the head where the crew washes up, or the berth where wet gear ends up. It works alongside One and covers up to 4 ft around it.

Ozone Not an ozone generator; certified to UL 867 Not an ozone generator; conforms to UL 867 and CARB certified

Neither one cleans a fish box or the deck. They work on the smell in the air.

What not to do

  • Don't run an ozone generator in the cabin. We don't recommend ozone generators aboard, and they don't clean the fish box.
  • Don't make sprays the plan. Fragrance on top of fish smell is still fish smell, and it comes back when the scent fades.
  • Don't mix up the smell. A rotten-egg smell may be the bilge or a battery, and a sewage smell is usually the head. See why boats smell for the full smell map, plus our bilge and head guides.

Boat fish and bait smell FAQ

How do I get fish smell out of a boat cabin?

Clean the source first. Wash the fish box, bait well, deck, coolers, gloves and towels, and pump and clean the bilge under them. Then air out the cabin and wash soft goods that picked up the smell. On a boat with AC, AIRLOCK One eliminates the fish odor left in the air the AC moves whenever the fan runs.

Will cleaning the fish box be enough?

Sometimes. If the smell already got into the bilge, the carpet, soft goods or underfloor foam, cleaning the fish box alone won't clear it. Check those spots, then treat the cabin air.

What's the best air approach for a sportfisher with salon AC?

AIRLOCK One by the air handler, one per AC unit, so the air the AC moves through the boat is treated whenever the fan runs. Add AIRLOCK Voyage alongside it in the galley, head or berth that smells worst after a fishing day.

Do I need AIRLOCK One, Voyage, or both after a fishing weekend?

Start with AIRLOCK One for the whole boat through the AC. Add AIRLOCK Voyage in one spot that still needs extra help, like the galley or head. Wash down the source either way.

Can charcoal bags alone fix fish smell?

No. AIRLOCK OdorGuard traps odors in the closed locker it sits in, which helps a tackle or gear locker. It doesn't clean the fish box, and it doesn't treat the cabin air.

Is an ozone generator safe for fish odor on a boat?

We don't recommend ozone generators aboard, and ozone doesn't replace a wash-down. AIRLOCK One is not an ozone generator and is certified to UL 867. AIRLOCK Voyage is not an ozone generator either, and it conforms to UL 867 and is CARB certified.
