If your boat head still smells, fix the source first. Do the hot rag test on the sanitation hoses, check the holding tank vent, look at the toilet seals, and keep the tank treated. Once the source is fixed, AIRLOCK One is the whole-boat answer for the head odor left in the cabin air on a boat with AC. It works through your boat's AC and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves whenever the fan runs. Most boaters install it in 15 to 30 minutes. For the head itself, add AIRLOCK Voyage alongside it. AIRLOCK doesn't treat the tank or the hoses.
The smell can come back after a good scrub because odor that already got out soaks into towels, cushions, curtains and the headliner, and hangs in the closed-up air. For the full map of cabin smells and where each one starts, see why boats smell. A new vent filter or a treated tank stops what comes out of the system. They don't clear what already reached the cabin.
Fix the source first
Work through this list before you buy anything for the cabin air. If something here is still failing, the smell keeps coming back.
- Hoses (hot rag test). Sanitation hose absorbs waste over time, and the smell comes through the hose wall even when nothing leaks. Wrap a hot, damp rag around the hose for a few minutes, then smell the rag. If the rag smells, replace that section of hose. Check the fittings at the toilet and the tank while you're there.
- Holding tank vent. A clogged vent or a spent vent filter can push odor back inside. Check the vent line for kinks, water traps or a blocked through-hull, and replace a vent filter on its maker's schedule. AIRLOCK doesn't sell vent filters, so buy the size your vent uses.
- Seals and valves. A worn toilet seal or joker valve can let odor into the bowl or under the toilet while the boat sits.
- Tank treatment. Use a marine holding tank treatment as its label directs, and pump out on a schedule that fits how you use the boat.
- Head ventilation. A closed-up head with damp towels and no airflow smells musty even when the tank side is fine. Crack a hatch or run a small vent fan when you can, and dry what you leave aboard.
If the smell is strongest at the deck vent, inside a hose locker or only when someone flushes, stay on this list. If the system checks out and the smell is in the general cabin air or the head after the boat has been closed, the next steps apply.
How to clear the smell that's left
- Air the boat out. Open hatches and ports for a cross-breeze, and run a cabin fan if you have one.
- Wash what comes off. Towels, curtains and removable covers. Hang the rest to dry when you can.
- Keep the tank habits going. Put treatment, vent filter service and the hose check on a calendar.
- Cabin air: AIRLOCK One. AIRLOCK One installs by the AC air handler and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves through the whole boat whenever the fan runs, cooling or not. You'll need one per AC unit, and with the fan off it does nothing. It treats the odor left in the air after the tank side is handled.
- The head itself: AIRLOCK Voyage. Put Voyage in the head, alongside AIRLOCK One. It plugs into a 12V socket or a wall outlet and eliminates odors up to 4 ft around it.
- The head cabinet: AIRLOCK OdorGuard. Put an OdorGuard coconut charcoal bag in the head cabinet or locker that still smells after the source work. It traps odors only in the closed space it sits in. Recharge it in the sun about once a month and replace it every 4 to 6 months.
What AIRLOCK doesn't do here
- It doesn't empty, treat or deodorize the holding tank.
- It doesn't replace a vent filter, sanitation hose, seal or joker valve.
- AIRLOCK One is not a dehumidifier, and it works only while the AC fan runs.
- OdorGuard works only inside the cabinet or locker it sits in, not on the cabin air.
Boat head and holding tank smell FAQ
Why does my marine toilet still smell after I treated the holding tank?
Treatment works on what's in the tank. A permeated hose, a clogged vent or a worn seal can keep adding odor, and odor that already reached the cabin hangs in the air and in soft goods. Do the hot rag test, check the vent and seals, then air out the boat. On a boat with AC, AIRLOCK One eliminates the odor left in the cabin air.
How do I know if my sanitation hose is permeated?
Use the hot rag test. Wrap a hot, damp rag around the hose for a few minutes, then smell the rag. If it smells, replace that hose.
What is a holding tank vent filter, and do I need one?
Many boats use a filter on the holding tank vent line so tank odor is less noticeable on deck and less likely to blow back. Filters clog or wear out, so replace them on the schedule the filter maker gives. AIRLOCK doesn't sell vent filters.
How do I stop marine toilet smell in the cabin after the tank is fixed?
Confirm the hoses, seals and vent are sound, then air the boat out and wash soft goods. On a boat with AC, AIRLOCK One eliminates the odor left in the air the AC moves whenever the fan runs. Add AIRLOCK Voyage in the head alongside it, and put OdorGuard in the head cabinet.
Will AIRLOCK One fix a permeated sanitation hose?
No. Replace the hose. AIRLOCK One only handles odor that's already in the cabin air the AC moves, and OdorGuard only helps inside the cabinet it sits in.
Is holding tank odor the same as a musty smell?
Not always. Holding tank and head odor is sewage-related and needs hose, vent and tank work first. A musty smell usually comes from damp lockers, cushions and a closed-up cabin. For surface mildew on seats, see mildew on boat vinyl seats. Both can be present on the same boat.
Can I use an ozone generator in the head?
We don't recommend ozone generators aboard. AIRLOCK One is not an ozone generator and is certified to UL 867. AIRLOCK Voyage is not an ozone generator either, and it conforms to UL 867 and is CARB certified. The ozone section of our best boat air purifier guide has more detail.
