When an AIRLOCK One seems like it isn't working, it almost always comes down to one of six things — and most of them take about two minutes to check. Work through them in order.

First, the one thing to understand

AIRLOCK One cleans the air your AC moves. The carbon-fiber brushes charge water vapor in the passing air into purifying ions. Those ions ride your ductwork, latch onto odors, and drop them out of the air.

No air moving past the brushes means no ions in your cabin. Every check on this page comes back to that.

The two-minute check

Placement: the brushes have to be in the airflow

The most common install issue

Ions are generated right at the brush tips — and they don't travel on their own. The moving air has to carry them into the system. If the unit is mounted off to the side, behind an obstruction, or facing away from the intake, the fan pulls air right past the ions and they never make it into your ducts.

How to tell

LED is purple, fan runs, cabin smells unchanged after a week → check placement first.

The fix

Mount AIRLOCK One as close as possible to the AC intake, with a clear, unobstructed path between the brush tips and the air being pulled in.

Is something choking the airflow?

The most common non-install issue

The unit can be perfectly installed and powered — but if the system is barely moving air, it's barely moving ions. And on a dirty system there's a second problem: ions latch onto the first contamination they meet. If that's a dust-caked coil or blower wheel, they spend themselves there instead of reaching your cabin.

Check for:

A dirty evaporator coil — even if the surface looks clean, buildup can sit deeper in the fins

A dirty blower wheel

A clogged return-air filter

Very dense aftermarket filters (some carbon filters cut airflow dramatically)

Closed or blocked vents — every closed vent is a cabin the ions can't reach

Crushed or kinked flex duct, or anything else that noticeably reduces flow

A slimy condensate pan or a blocked condensate drain — this one is both a restriction and an odor source sitting directly in your air path

Worth fixing regardless of AIRLOCK: a choked system works harder, cools worse, and circulates dirty air on its own.

The fix

Clean the coil and blower, replace or rinse the return filter, open every vent — then give AIRLOCK One a fresh week of regular runtime before judging it.

How often does your fan actually run?

Habits matter as much as hardware

AIRLOCK One purifies while air is moving — the ions do their work in the moment and don't linger between cycles. If your system only runs an hour here and there, results will come, but slower.

How to tell

The boat smells better after a day aboard with the AC running, but stale again when you return the next weekend → it's runtime, not the unit.

You don't need to run it constantly. Hundreds of customers get great results running the fan a few hours at a time, whenever they're aboard. But the more the fan runs, the more ions circulate — and fan-only works fine, no cooling required.

Boat unplugged all winter? Expect a few days of runtime at spring launch before the storage funk clears. That's normal.

The fix

One unit covers one air handler

The most common coverage misread

Ions travel where your ductwork travels — and no further. If your boat has two AC units, one AIRLOCK One is cleaning exactly half your air. The staterooms on the second system won't change, no matter how well the first unit works.

How to tell

The salon smells great but the aft cabin doesn't, and they're on separate AC units → coverage, not performance.

Same logic for spaces your AC doesn't duct into at all — on many layouts, the head or a storage area. No airflow there means no ions there. That's the job of the plug-in AIRLOCK Voyage, which treats the space immediately around it (about a 4-foot range).

The fix

One AIRLOCK One per AC unit / air handler. For spaces the ductwork doesn't reach, use a Voyage in that space.

A smell that keeps coming back has a source

The honest one

Here's the straight answer: AIRLOCK One removes odors from the air — including ones that have soaked into cushions, headliner, and gear over years. What it can't do is out-clean a source that's still producing odor faster than any air treatment can clear it. Pumping the bilge doesn't fix the leak.

How to tell

The air improves while the fan runs, but the same smell is back at full strength within hours → you have an active source, not an air problem.

Two things make the hunt short. A smell is always strongest at its source, so trust your nose over your theory — and heat makes odor worse, which makes a hot afternoon the best time to go looking, not the worst.

What the smell is telling you

Lives in the head rather than the whole boat. Worst when you step aboard after a week away, then fades once you've flushed a few times.
Raw-water head intake
Rolls out of the toilet just after you flush.
Blocked tank vent, or a worn joker valve
Sharp and sour, more chemical than sewer. Strongest wherever the hoses run.
Permeated sanitation hose
Swampy and musty. Worse in heat, worse after the boat's been shut up.
Bilge, sump, or trapped water

The usual suspects

Permeated sanitation hose

Hose absorbs whatever sits still inside it, and once it's saturated nothing reverses it — replacement is the only cure. The test: wipe a section clean, wrap it in a cloth wrung out in hot water, let it cool, then smell the cloth.

Holding tank vent

A tank that can breathe doesn't generate foul gas in the first place. Nearly every blockage is right at the through-hull fitting — insect nests, dirt, pollen. Blast it out with a hose at every wash-down.

Raw-water head intake

Sea and lake water bring organisms aboard that die in the intake line, pump, and bowl rim. Hot weather makes it much worse. Flushing the system through with fresh water and white vinegar settles it.

The bilge

The source most people rule out first and shouldn't — it's easy to look at and easy to assume is fine. Cleaning means detergent, a real rinse, then sponging it dry with the hatches open. Adding cleaner and pumping it overboard isn't cleaning.

Shower and AC sumps

Hair, soap scum, and body oils turn a sump sewer-like faster than a bilge. Worth extra attention here: on many boats the AC condensate drains into a sump too, putting it in the same compartment as your air handler.

Water trapped below the sole

If everything's clean and a swampy smell still returns whenever the boat is closed up, water is standing where it can't drain — often a blocked limber hole. It won't stop smelling until it's found, and it rots what it sits against.

Also worth a sniff: the chain locker, where a wet rode ferments fast in salt water, and any locker or bay that never fully dries out.

The fix

Find the source and deal with it first. Then give AIRLOCK One a week of regular runtime to clear what's left — in the air, and in the cushions and headliner that have been soaking it up.
