HOW AIRLOCK WORKS

The Science Behind Odor-Free Boats

AIRLOCK One leverages advanced Bipolar Ionization to treat your boat’s air at the molecular level.

Ion Generation
1

Ion Generation

AIRLOCK One uses Bipolar Ionization Technology to treat your boat’s air. It features two carbon fiber brushes—one positively charged, the other negatively charged—that interact with water vapor (H₂O) in the air to generate hydrogen (H⁺) and oxygen (O₂⁻) ions.

These ions are then introduced into the airflow and distributed throughout the boat via the AC system.

Ion Flow
2

Ion Flow

Once released, the hydrogen (H⁺) and oxygen (O₂⁻) ions travel through the boat’s ductwork, carried by the air conditioning system. As air circulates, these ions disperse throughout the cabin, reaching into vents, cushions, and other hard-to-reach areas where odors and airborne particles may linger.

Ion Discharge
3

Ion Discharge

AIRLOCK One releases powerful ions that actively target airborne pollutants—attaching to their surfaces and breaking them down at the molecular level. This process causes contaminants like odors, mold spores, allergens, bacteria, and dust to clump together, making them heavier so they fall from the air and are captured by your AC filter.

Particle Neutralization
4

Particle Neutralization

Once released, AIRLOCK One’s charged ions flow through your boat’s ductwork, riding the AC airflow to reach every corner of the cabin.

From cushions to crevices, these ions spread throughout the entire space—circulating clean, refreshing air where it’s needed most.

Long-Lasting Effect
5

Long-Lasting Effect

AIRLOCK One’s Bipolar Ionization technology generates a continuous flow of charged ions that actively seek out and neutralize airborne contaminants at the source. As they complete their job, these ions naturally revert back into water vapor—allowing the purification process to repeat again and again.

This self-sustaining cycle helps maintain cleaner air inside your cabin, providing long-lasting freshness with no filters to replace.

Why Every Boat Smells — And Why Cleaning Doesn't Fix It

1.

Mold and Mildew Growth

Mold and Mildew Growth

Mold thrives when humidity stays above 60%, and the EPA warns this is when growth becomes likely indoors. Boats often sit above that level, especially in warm or coastal climates, creating musty odors even before mold is visible.
If your cabin stays humid, smells can start building in just a couple of days.

The usual suspects you’ll find in boats:

Aspergillus niger
One of the most recognizable black molds in humid environments
Penicillium species
The fuzzy blue/green growth
Cladosporium species
A dark mold that shows up as dark spots
Stachybotrys chartarum
Known as toxic black mold, but only in severe cases.

2.

Bacterial Growth in Stagnant Water and Marine Environments

Bacterial Growth in Stagnant Water and Marine Environments

Standing water in the bilge or holding tank turns into an odor source fast. Bacteria breaks down the gunk and creates rotten egg and fishy smells. Marine environments make it worse because humidity, heat, and salt air keep these areas damp, so smells build fast when the boat stays closed.

Pseudomonas species

Penicillium species
Common marine bacteria
Sulfur reducing bacteria
Produces that rotten egg smell from hydrogen sulfide

3.

Off-Gassing from Boat Materials

Off-Gassing from Boat Materials

New or recently refurbished boats release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from fiberglass resins, adhesives, plastics, and coatings. These chemicals can contribute to that “chemical” or “new boat” smell.

New or recently refurbished boats release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from fiberglass resins, adhesives, plastics, and coatings. These chemicals can contribute to that “chemical” or “new boat” smell.

The usual suspects you’ll find in boats:

Fiberglass resins
Release styrene compounds for months after curing
Vinyl and cushion materials
They emit plasticizers and flame retardants into cabin air
Adhesives and sealants
Off-gas formaldehyde and solvents, especially when heated

4.

Humidity vs. Temperature

Humidity vs. Temperature

While temperature plays a role in comfort, research consistently points to relative humidity as the dominant factor in mold risk. On a boat, salt air, condensation, and enclosed layouts create an environment where humidity naturally builds up, making proactive moisture control essential.

Common conditions in marine environments:

High humidity (>60%)
Mold thrives at 70-75°F when moisture levels stay elevated
Condensation on cool surfaces
Windows and hatches collect moisture even in warm air
Salt air retention
Coastal humidity keeps surfaces damp longer

Boat Design Traps Air and Moisture

Elli-Yacht

“After 3 months with AIRLOCK on board, we’ve done the taco test, pump-out test, diesel test, dog test, barf test—you name it. We've tested everything, and it’s amazing. There’s no smell at all!”

Sailing Free Spirit

“I was done dealing with smells—I was frustrated. Then I saw their ad claiming it’s a permanent solution. I believe them. I use AIRLOCK on my boat, and it works. Two thumbs up!”

GenXPats

“I’ve been completely thrilled with the results after installing the AIRLOCK One systems. I honestly smell nothing but fresh air.

When we came back to the boat, we were nearly knocked over by the bathroom smell—so we plugged the AIRLOCK Voyage back in, and no joke, 10 minutes later the smell was gone.”

Tyler McLaughlin

“We installed a couple of these on our dad’s boat, which had some musty smells. When my mom got onboard after we installed them, she immediately noticed the smells were gone! I’m super excited to install my own AIRLOCK and get rid of all the stinky smells. If I were you, I’d get an AIRLOCK!”

InTooDeep

“I know AIRLOCK is working—it definitely makes a difference. They're simple to install and totally maintenance-free. Just install it and you’re good to go. No refills or anything like that.”

Capt. Ricky Wheeler

"I was skeptical, but after fishing daily for 3 weeks and installing the AIRLOCK One, it kept the salon on our 60-foot boat smelling great—even with guys in and out 24/7, sweat, and fish. I vouch for AIRLOCK—it really works!"

The Siren's Log

"We installed our AIRLOCK One today, and we can already confirm it’s made a huge difference with boat odors and dust. Highly recommended!"

How easy is AIRLOCK One to install?

Most boaters are done in 15–20 minutes with just a screwdriver. No electrician, no drilling, no permanent modifications.

My boat doesn't have AC. Will this work?

AIRLOCK One works with your boat's existing AC system to treat air throughout the cabin.

No AC? AIRLOCK Voyage was built for you — plug it into any outlet, place it anywhere onboard, and it eliminates odors in small, enclosed spaces. No installation needed.

Shop AIRLOCK Voyage →

Can I connect it so it only runs when the fans run?

Yes — you can wire AIRLOCK One to your fan circuit so it runs only when the fans are on. This is the most effective setup since that's when ions get distributed throughout the cabin.

If wiring to the fan circuit isn't possible, running it continuously works perfectly fine too. It uses very little power either way.

Is AIRLOCK One maintenance-free?

Yes. No filters, no refills, no spare parts — ever. In rare cases with extremely dusty AC systems, a light wipe of the ion emitters with a soft cloth every few months is all it needs. That's it.

Is AIRLOCK One ozone-safe?

Yes — AIRLOCK One is not an ozone generator. It's UL 867 Certified, operating well below the 0.05 ppm safety threshold set by both UL and the FDA. That's the same standard applied to everyday appliances like printers, blenders, and hair dryers. Clean air, no ozone.
