Why Your Clothes Smell Like the Boat (and How to Stop It)

Clothes hanging in a boat cabin locker

Clothes smell like the boat because they soak up damp, musty cabin air while they hang in a locker or sit on a berth. Washing gets the smell out, but the next weekend aboard puts it right back. To stop that, deal with the cabin air and the lockers. AIRLOCK One is the whole-boat answer for the musty smell in the cabin air on a boat with AC. It installs by the AC air handler, one per AC unit, and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves through the boat whenever the fan runs. Most boaters install it in 15 to 30 minutes. In the hanging locker itself, AIRLOCK MoistureGuard soaks up damp, and AIRLOCK OdorGuard traps musty odors if the locker already smells. For a berth or head next to the locker that smells worst, add AIRLOCK Voyage in that spot alongside One.

How clothes pick up boat smell

Fabric holds smell. Cotton, fleece and towels soak up whatever is in the air around them, and a boat's cabin air is often damp and musty, especially after the boat sits closed. Hanging lockers make it worse. They're small, closed spaces with little airflow, often built against the hull, where it's cooler and damp collects. Clothes hung there for a week come out smelling like the locker.

Then there's what you bring aboard. Wet swimsuits, damp towels and foul-weather gear stowed below add moisture, and everything near them picks it up.

An AIRLOCK customer described it well: "Wife has been complaining for years of 'the boat smell' getting on her clothes. I can say this is the first time my wife has walked into the boat and said 'wow no smell' they really do work!" (Aaron V.)

What laundry can and can't do

Washing removes the smell from the clothes. It doesn't change the air and lockers that put the smell there. A shirt washed at home and hung back in a musty locker will smell like the boat again by the next trip.

A few laundry habits help:

  • Wash with your usual detergent and dry clothes completely before they go back aboard.
  • Don't stow anything damp. Dry swimsuits, towels and gear in the sun or at home before they go in a locker.
  • Keep boat clothes separate from your clean clothes at home until they're washed.
  • Bring home what you don't need aboard, especially between trips and over winter.

Spraying fabric freshener on shirts covers the smell with fragrance for a while, and the musty smell comes back when the scent fades.

The locker stack

The hanging locker is where most of the clothing smell starts, so treat the locker as its own space.

  1. Empty and dry it. Take everything out on a dry day, wipe the walls and floor, and leave the door open for a few hours.
  2. AIRLOCK MoistureGuard for damp. Put a MoistureGuard bag in the hanging locker or closet. It's a silica desiccant that soaks up damp in the space it sits in, with no power and no water to spill, and it's reusable for up to a year. When the indicator turns pink, microwave it on high for 5 minutes (based on a 1000W microwave) and let it cool for 5 minutes. It works inside that locker only.
  3. AIRLOCK OdorGuard for smell. If the locker already smells musty, add an OdorGuard coconut shell charcoal bag. It traps musty odors in the locker it sits in. Recharge it in the sun about once a month and replace it every 4 to 6 months.
  4. Leave the door cracked when you're aboard and it's safe, so locker air can mix with the cabin air.
  5. Leave room. A packed locker holds damp. Hang fewer clothes and leave space between them.

Many boats use both bags in the same locker, MoistureGuard for damp and OdorGuard for smell.

The cabin air stack

Your clothes smell like the cabin, so the cabin air matters as much as the locker.

AIRLOCK One sits by the AC air handler in the intake airflow and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves through the boat whenever the fan runs, cooling or not. Bigger boats need one per AC unit to cover the whole boat. With the fan off, it does nothing. It's not a laundry product, and it doesn't dry clothes. It treats the cabin air your clothes are sitting in.

For the worst spot, often a V-berth or the head next to the hanging locker, add AIRLOCK Voyage alongside One. It plugs into a 12V socket or a wall outlet and has an odor removal range up to 4 ft. For how One and Voyage fit together on a boat with AC, see the best boat air purifier guide.

Katharine S., a boat owner, described the towel version: "We hang the towels to dry but with the moist boat environment they always seemed to have a musty smell after two or so days."

If the whole cabin stays damp

If clothes go musty even in a clean, empty locker, the cabin is probably humid. A hygrometer shows it. The EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60%. A dehumidifier or the AC brings humidity down. AIRLOCK One is not a dehumidifier. See our boat cabin humidity guide and boat dehumidifier guide. If the cushions and bedding smell musty too, see our guide to musty boat cushions. For every other source of boat smell, see why boats smell.

What not to do

  • Don't run an ozone generator in a locker full of clothes, or anywhere in the cabin. We don't recommend ozone generators aboard.
  • Don't make fabric spray the plan. It covers the smell for a while, and the smell comes back.
  • Don't stow wet gear with dry clothes. One damp towel can make a whole locker smell.

Boat clothes smell FAQ

Why do my clothes smell like the boat after a weekend?

They soak up the damp, musty air in the cabin and the hanging locker. Lockers are small, closed and often against the hull, so damp collects there, and fabric holds onto the smell.

Will washing them fix it permanently?

Washing removes the smell from the clothes, but they'll pick it up again on the next trip if the locker and cabin air still smell. Dry clothes fully before you stow them, put MoistureGuard in the locker, and deal with the cabin air.

Does an air purifier help with boat smell on clothes?

It helps with the source of the smell, which is the cabin air. AIRLOCK One eliminates odors in the air the AC moves through the whole boat whenever the fan runs, so clothes aboard sit in air that doesn't smell musty. It doesn't wash or dry clothes.

Should I put MoistureGuard in the hanging locker?

Yes. MoistureGuard soaks up damp in the locker it sits in, with no power, and it's reusable for up to a year. If the locker already smells musty, add OdorGuard too. Neither bag treats the cabin air outside the locker.

One, Voyage, or both for locker smell?

Start with AIRLOCK One for the whole boat through the AC, plus MoistureGuard in the locker. If the berth or head next to the locker still smells musty, add AIRLOCK Voyage there alongside One.

Is ozone safe to remove boat smell from clothes?

We don't recommend ozone generators aboard, and ozone doesn't fix a damp locker. AIRLOCK One is not an ozone generator and is certified to UL 867. AIRLOCK Voyage is not an ozone generator either, and it conforms to UL 867 and is CARB certified.
