How to Get Mildew Smell Out of Boat Cushions (and Keep It From Coming Back)

Cabin cushions in a boat salon or berth

To get mildew smell out of boat cushions, dry them out, clean the covers the way the fabric maker allows, and fix the damp in the berth or locker underneath. Once the cushions are dry, AIRLOCK One is the whole-boat answer for the musty smell left in the cabin air. It installs by the AC air handler, one per AC unit, and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves through the boat whenever the fan runs. Most boaters install it in 15 to 30 minutes. For a V-berth or salon corner that stays musty, add AIRLOCK Voyage in that spot alongside One. In the closed locker under the cushions, AIRLOCK MoistureGuard soaks up damp in that compartment.

Cushions vs vinyl seats

This page is about fabric-covered cushions and the foam inside them, meaning berth mattresses, V-berth pads, salon settee cushions and dinette backs. For vinyl cockpit and helm seats, see how to get mildew off vinyl boat seats, which covers cleaning methods for marine vinyl.

Why boat cushions go musty

A cushion is a sponge with a cover on it. Foam soaks up moisture from spills, wet swimsuits, sweat, rain through a hatch and the damp air of a closed cabin, and it gives that moisture up slowly.

Berth cushions often sit on a plywood base or right against the hull, which gets cold at night. Warm, damp cabin air meets that cold surface, condensation forms under the cushion, and the underside stays wet where you can't see it. The EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60%, and a closed boat often sits above that, so the foam never fully dries between weekends. The result is the musty smell that hits you when you lift a cushion or lie down on a berth.

Clean and dry first

  1. Take the cushions out of the boat on a dry day if you can, and stand them on edge in the sun and air so both faces dry.
  2. Remove the covers if they unzip, and wash them following the fabric maker's care label. Some marine fabrics shouldn't go in a dryer, so check first.
  3. Treat the foam gently. Press out moisture with towels and let the foam dry completely before you put the covers back on. Don't soak foam you can't dry the same day.
  4. Check the base. Wipe and dry the plywood or locker lid under the cushion. If you see dark spotting there, clean it and find out where the water came from.
  5. Replace what's gone. If foam still smells musty after a full dry-out, or it's crumbling or stained through, replace it. When you do, ask the upholsterer about foam made for marine use.
  6. Wash the rest. Bedding, pillows, towels and curtains pick up the same smell. Take them home and wash them.

AIRLOCK doesn't sell a cushion cleaner, and none of our products clean or dry foam.

Stop the musty smell from coming back

  • Dry before you close up. Don't put damp towels, swimsuits or bedding back on a cushion, and prop cushions on edge when you leave the boat if you can.
  • Let air under the berth. A cushion pressed flat against a cold base stays damp underneath. Some owners put an open-weave mat made for mattresses under berth cushions so air can move.
  • MoistureGuard in the closed space below. Put an AIRLOCK MoistureGuard bag in the locker or storage under the berth or settee. It's a silica desiccant that soaks up damp in the compartment it sits in, with no power and no water to spill, and it's reusable for up to a year. It works on that compartment, not on the cushion or the cabin.
  • Watch the humidity. A hygrometer shows whether the cabin stays above 60%. If it does, a dehumidifier or the AC brings it down. AIRLOCK One is not a dehumidifier. Our boat cabin humidity guide and boat dehumidifier guide cover that part.
  • Vent when the weather allows, especially after cooking and showers.

The musty smell in the air: AIRLOCK One and AIRLOCK Voyage

Even after the cushions are clean and dry, the musty smell that built up can hang in the closed cabin air and come back when the boat sits shut. That's the part AIRLOCK One handles. It sits by the air handler in the AC intake airflow and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves to the salon, cabins and berths whenever the fan runs, cooling or not. Bigger boats need one per AC unit. With the fan off, it does nothing.

For one spot that stays musty, like a V-berth or a forward cabin the AC doesn't reach well, add AIRLOCK Voyage alongside One. It plugs into a 12V socket or a wall outlet and has an odor removal range up to 4 ft.

For a closed gear locker that already smells musty, AIRLOCK OdorGuard coconut shell charcoal bags trap odors in the locker they sit in. Recharge them in the sun about once a month and replace them every 4 to 6 months.

Mathers on the Map wrote about AIRLOCK One: "The AIRLOCK One has been good to us so far. It eliminates that musty smell we had on our boat ."

Storing cushions over winter

Take cushions and bedding home if you can, or make sure everything left aboard is fully dry. Put MoistureGuard and OdorGuard in the closed lockers. AIRLOCK One works only when there's shore power and the AC fan runs, so it does nothing while the boat sits unplugged. The full steps are on why boats smell after storage.

Boat cushion mildew smell FAQ

Why do my boat cushions smell musty?

The foam soaks up moisture and dries slowly, and a cushion sitting on a cold berth base or against the hull stays damp underneath. In a closed, humid cabin it never fully dries between trips, and the musty smell builds up.

How do I get mildew smell out of boat cushion foam?

Take the cushions out on a dry day, remove and wash the covers per the care label, press moisture out of the foam and let it dry completely in the air and sun. If the foam still smells after a full dry-out or is breaking down, replace it.

Will an air purifier fix stinky cushions by itself?

No. Cushions need drying and cleaning first, because the smell comes from damp foam. After that, AIRLOCK One eliminates the musty odor left in the cabin air the AC moves whenever the fan runs.

MoistureGuard or OdorGuard under the seats?

MoistureGuard for damp, OdorGuard for smell, and many boats use both. Both work only inside the closed locker or compartment they sit in. MoistureGuard soaks up damp there, and OdorGuard traps musty odors there. Neither dries the cushion above it.

How do I clear a musty smell in the V-berth?

Dry the V-berth cushions first. Then use AIRLOCK One for the musty smell in the whole cabin air through the AC, and put AIRLOCK Voyage in the V-berth alongside it for that zone.

Should I use an ozone generator on cushions?

We don't recommend ozone generators aboard, and ozone doesn't dry damp foam. AIRLOCK One is not an ozone generator and is certified to UL 867. AIRLOCK Voyage is not an ozone generator either, and it conforms to UL 867 and is CARB certified.
