Why Does My RV AC Smell Musty? What to Clean First, Then Clear the Air

Open ceiling AC return with a dusty filter inside an RV cabin

An RV AC smells musty when moisture and dust sit in the return-air filter, on the cooling coil or in a slow condensate drain, and the fan blows that smell through the RV. Wash the return-air filter, and have the coil and drain checked if the smell stays after the filter is clean. Once the unit is clean, AIRLOCK One RV installs at that same rooftop AC, one per AC, and eliminates odors in the air the AC moves whenever the fan runs, cooling or not. If the AC smells like burning, hot wiring or exhaust, shut it off and call for service, because that isn't an odor problem.

Why the musty smell shows up at the AC

The rooftop AC moves most of the air inside the RV. Every pass pulls in the cooking, the wet towels, the dog and the humidity from the living space, then pushes that air back out through the ceiling vents.

The AC also pulls water out of the air as it cools. That water condenses on the cold coil and has to drain away. When dust builds up on a filter or a coil that keeps getting wet, the smell rides along with the airflow, and it's often strongest in the first few minutes after the AC starts.

What to clean first

1. The return-air filter. This is the owner's job, and it's the first thing to check. Most rooftop AC manuals call for washing the return-air filter every couple of weeks of use. It sits behind the return-air grille in the ceiling. Wash it, let it dry completely and put it back, and don't run the AC without it. Intervals vary by brand and model, so check the AC maker's manual for the unit on your roof.

2. The coil and the condensate drain. The EPA's mold guide advises keeping air conditioning drip pans clean and the drain lines unobstructed and flowing properly. On a rooftop RV unit, the coil and drain pan sit inside the unit on the roof, so that work belongs to a qualified service technician. If the filter is clean and the musty smell is still there, or water drips from the ceiling assembly, have an RV service tech check the coil and the drain path.

3. The ceiling assembly and vents. Clean the ceiling assembly the way the AC maker's manual says. On a ducted RV, wipe the ceiling registers too, and leave the inside of the ducts to a tech.

If the whole RV smells musty, not just the AC

If the musty smell is there with the AC off, the source is somewhere in the RV. A roof or window leak, a wet cushion or a damp closet can all produce it.

Where AIRLOCK One RV fits

Once the filter is washed and the unit is clean, some musty smell usually hangs on in the air and in soft goods. AIRLOCK One RV is the RV air purifier at the rooftop AC, which is exactly where that air moves.

  • Where it goes: at the rooftop AC intake, ducted or non-ducted, one unit per AC. A two-AC RV needs two.
  • Install: a 15-minute DIY install, usually from inside at the ceiling vent, with no ladder. Step-by-step instructions are on the AIRLOCK One install page.
  • When it works: whenever the AC fan moves air. Cooling is optional, so the fan setting alone does the job.
  • Upkeep: nothing to replace. Keep washing the AC's own return-air filter on the AC maker's schedule, since One RV relies on the AC's airflow.
  • Power: 100-240V AC rooftop units only. It isn't compatible with 12V or 48V DC rooftop AC units.

The air clears first. Smell that has soaked into cushions, curtains and bedding takes longer, and after a long closed-up stretch, plan on weeks rather than days. For how the ionization works, see how AIRLOCK works.

Mike S., an AIRLOCK One owner, wrote: "I have it mounted directly in front of my AC unit and all I smell is fresh air." Kevin K. wrote: "Really takes away the odors from cooking, and the humidity smell that campers can often get."

One RV doesn't clean the coil, dry the unit or dehumidify the RV. Those stay maintenance and moisture jobs.

Voyage RV alongside

Some rooms get less air from the AC than others: a bathroom with the door shut, a bunk room at the far end, a pet corner. AIRLOCK Voyage RV sits in that room alongside One RV, runs from a 12V socket or a wall outlet, and has an odor removal range up to 4 ft. It complements One RV and doesn't replace it.

What not to do

  • Fragrance clips in the vents as the plan. They add scent on top of the musty smell and leave the filter, coil and drain as they were.
  • Ozone generators in the RV. CARB strongly advises against ozone generators in spaces occupied by people or animals, and the EPA says no agency of the federal government has approved them for occupied spaces. AIRLOCK One RV and Voyage RV are not ozone generators.
  • Spraying bleach or cleaners into the unit. Follow the AC maker's manual for cleaning, and leave the inside of the unit to a qualified technician. The EPA's mold guide also says bleach and other biocides are not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup.

RV AC musty smell FAQ

Why does my RV AC smell musty when I turn it on?

Usually because the return-air filter is dirty or the coil and drain inside the unit stay damp, and the fan pushes that smell out first. Wash the return-air filter, and if the smell stays, have a tech check the coil and the condensate drain.

How do I clean a musty RV air conditioner filter?

Remove the return-air filter from behind the return-air grille, wash it, let it dry completely and reinstall it. Most rooftop AC manuals call for washing the return-air filter every couple of weeks of use, and the AC maker's manual for your unit has its exact schedule.

Is a musty RV AC smell mold?

A musty smell usually points to damp and dust somewhere in the system, and we can't diagnose mold from a smell. If there is visible growth or water damage, follow the EPA's mold cleanup guidance or call a professional, and see our mold in a camper guide.

Will an air purifier fix a musty RV AC?

After the filter is washed and the unit is clean, AIRLOCK One RV eliminates the musty odor left in the air the AC moves. It doesn't clean the coil or dry the unit, so the cleaning comes first.

Does AIRLOCK One RV work when the AC isn't cooling?

Yes. AIRLOCK One RV works whenever the AC fan is moving air, so running the fan alone is enough.

Do I need one AIRLOCK One RV per AC?

Yes. AIRLOCK One RV treats the air that moves through the AC it's installed in, so each rooftop AC needs its own unit. A ducted AC that feeds several ceiling vents still counts as one.

Can I install AIRLOCK One RV on a non-ducted rooftop AC?

Yes. AIRLOCK One RV works with ducted and non-ducted rooftop AC units that run on 100-240V AC. It installs in 15 minutes.
