Why a month in storage leaves your RV smelling musty (and the 15-minute fix)

Brad lives in his Airstream most of the year. It sat in storage for a month, and the day after he fired up the rooftop AC, he recorded this.

What does an RV smell like after a month in storage?

What the first AC run does after storage ↓

Three things storage does to your RV's air

If your rig has been sitting and you're about to take it out, this is what's waiting inside.

1A closed coach holds on to every bit of humidity

With the vents shut and the AC off, whatever humidity was inside the day you parked stayed there, and in a sealed RV it turns stale fast.

"We've had our airlock in our 24 ft RV for a few weeks. It has definitely helped with the stale air smell due to being stored in the summer heat."
Judy S., Verified Buyer

2Soft goods soak it up and give it back

Cushions, the mattress, curtains and carpet soak up that stale air while the rig sits, then let it back out the day you open the door. That's why the coach still smells musty after you wipe every surface you can reach.

"Really takes away the odors from cooking, and the humidity smell that campers can often get."
Kevin K., RV owner

3The first AC run spreads it through the whole coach

Plug in and start the rooftop AC for the trip out, and the fan pushes that stored air into the bedroom, the bath and every closet. A spray covers it for a day. AIRLOCK One installs inside the rooftop AC, so whenever the fan runs, it treats the air that AC moves and eliminates the musty smell instead of masking it.

"The musty smell is gone and cooking smells have been eliminated. Easy install!"
Stephen W., Verified Buyer

So what happened the day Brad fired his up?

What Brad's video shows

AIRLOCK One runs on the rooftop AC's power, so whenever the rig's power is off, it's off too and does nothing while the coach sits in storage. Brad's video shows the moment he got back: he plugged in, ran the rooftop AC, and there was zero musty smell. Every time the AC fan runs after that, AIRLOCK One picks up where it left off.

Next question: what does the 15-minute install actually take?

A hand placing AIRLOCK One into the ceiling AC opening with the grille off
Ramble Trailerworks, Texas

Installs in 15 minutes, no experience required

It usually goes in from inside the coach: drop the ceiling AC grille, mount AIRLOCK One in the opening, connect two wires to the AC's own power, and put the grille back. There's no ladder and no roof work.

  • Works with ducted and non-ducted rooftop AC
  • No maintenance, nothing to replace
  • CARB certified, and not an ozone generator
  • 2-Year Warranty

One more question before you pick: how many does your rig need?

Pick one per rooftop AC

A ducted system that feeds several ceiling vents still counts as one AC. Many rigs run two rooftop ACs, and Brad runs one on each of his.

Next: watch RVers install it on a Coleman Mach and a fully ducted AC, then read the full 90-day terms.

"We had a musty odor in our Airstream after it was stored for a few weeks. Ahead of a 2 week trip I ordered Airlocks for both AC units. I watched the install video by Brad from 13 Adventures. … The air quality is fantastic and no trace of any musty odor or food smells remains."
Frederick B., Airstream owner

FAQ

Does it need power?

Yes. AIRLOCK One wires into the power your rooftop AC already uses, so there's no outlet, battery or cord. It treats the air whenever the AC fan runs (cooling is optional), so the rig needs shore power or the generator. With the power off in storage, it's off too.

Will it work with my non-ducted rooftop AC?

Yes. It works with ducted and non-ducted rooftop AC, one per AC unit. It needs a 100 to 240V AC unit and won't work with a 12V DC air conditioner.

Is it an ozone machine?

No. AIRLOCK One is not an ozone generator. It's certified to UL 867 and CARB certified.

What if it doesn't work for my rig?

You have 90 days. Install it, give it a few weeks, and if your rig doesn't smell better, email us and we'll refund you. A coach closed up for a season can take a few weeks to clear, which is why the window is 90 days.

Install it before the trip out, and the first AC run starts treating the air instead of spreading the musty smell around.
